Appointment of new Associate Vice-Principal (Research)
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Jacques Hurtubise as Associate Vice-Principal (Research), effective August 1, 2004. Dr Hurtubise, who received his BSc from Universit茅 de Montr茅al and his PhD from Oxford, is a professor in Mathematics and Statistics. He came to 海角社区 in 1988 as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1994. He has served on numerous academic, selection and administrative committees at 海角社区 and externally, at the local, provincial, national and international levels. From 1999 to 2003, he was director of the Centre de recherches math茅matiques at Universit茅 de Montr茅al. He also served as president of the R茅seau de calcul et de mod茅lisation math茅matique at the Universit茅 de Montr茅al during the same period. He has just been elected to the Royal Society of Canada, Academy of Science.
As Associate Vice-Principal (Research), Dr Hurtubise will assume a wide range of key research administration responsibilities, including research policies and procedures, provision of expert advice on matters related to research and research ethics, and the coordination of the approval process for all new research centres. He will work to develop and promote 海角社区's research partnerships with industry, other research organizations, and government departments and agencies. He will oversee the Research Grants Office, the Office of International Research and the Canada Foundation for Innovation Office, and will work closely with Research and Restricted funds to ensure effective administration of research funding. He will also serve as president of the scientific committee for the 2006 Acfas congress, which will be hosted by 海角社区.
Dr Hurtubise's August appointment will allow for a period of overlap with outgoing Associate Vice-Principal Ian Butler, who will continue his term until December 31.
