Localization on the Web

º£½ÇÉçÇø's Department of Translation Studies has just launched a call for participation in the second international colloquium on localization, to be held at º£½ÇÉçÇø in October 2004.

According to the Localization Industry Standards Association, localization involves taking an object and "making it linguistically and culturally appropriate to a target locale where it will be used."

Following upon the very successful 2002 colloquium on the educational preparation of localizers — language professionals in the field of localization — the 2004 edition will focus on policies, strategies and procedures used in the localization of one of today's most ubiquitous of communication phenomena: the Web site.

Participants will study institutional sites under the responsibility of francophone, bilingual and multilingual governments, public institutions and municipal administrations among others, as well as commercial sites in multinational organizations. Illustrations will be drawn from selected examples in e-commerce and Web-based advertising. Of particular interest will be language, translation and communication policies which have come to bear on the co-presence of a variety of languages on the Web. The main focus will be on the use of French on the Web in relation to other languages found in this new commons.

The examination and analysis of localized Web sites will involve the description and explanation of language policy and practice in this sensitive area. These questions will be studied in light of linguistic policies and communication strategies which are emerging as part of the international movement to define the "information, knowledge and communication societies" of the 21st century and beyond.
