How 海角社区鈥檚 Leaders #InspireInclusion

Friday, March 8 is International Women鈥檚 Day, marking the achievements of women and serving as a call to action for accelerating women鈥檚 equality.

This year鈥檚 theme is Inspire Inclusion 鈥 a message exemplified by 海角社区鈥檚 female leaders. At the moment, 10 of 海角社区鈥檚 14 deans are women; three are the first to ever to lead their Faculty.

Their thoughts on the women who inspire them, the progress that鈥檚 been made, and the barriers that have yet to be broken.

In February and March, 海角社区 will be hosting Dr. Samaila Suleiman, Associate Professor, of History, Bayero University Kano, Nigeria. In addition to conducting research and co-teaching with Nanre, Dr. Sulieman will be holding a special workshop on archiving and a keynote lecture.

Matthew Slopecki, Ph.D. candidate in the Biomechanics of Occupation and Sports Lab, recently presented his research on an innovative wearable technology approach to quantify performance and fatigue related changes in the movement patterns of Paralympic Swimmers.

He presented at both the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports "Mid-Year Symposium" and Institut National du Sports du Qu茅bec's conference series "The Ingenuity Behind the Performance".

Margaret Mackenzie and Samantha Nepton, both 2023 graduates of the Bachelor of Education program, are finalists for the McCall MacBain Scholarships, Canada鈥檚 largest leadership-based scholarships for master鈥檚 and professional studies.

Each finalist was chosen based on their character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity.

Luke Spagnuolo has received The Gord Sleivert Young Investigator Award at the 2023 Sport Innovation Conference.

Luke received this award for his thesis project examining muscle fatigue in USports rowers which he presented at the conference in Halifax.

Members of 海角社区's leadership including the Faculty of Education鈥檚 Associate Dean of Academics, Dr. Sheryl Smith-Gilman, were hosted by the Mohawk community of Kahnaw脿:ke on November 22, 2023 for a day of learning and collaboration.

鈥淲hat a fantastic experience it was to be part of the day of learning at the longhouse,鈥 Dr. Smith-Gilman reported. Apart from her role as Associate Dean, Dr. Smith-Gilman鈥檚 academic career has largely involved Early Childhood Education and Indigenous Education.

Silar Gardy, PhD candidate in the the DKPE's Musculoskeletal Health & Physical Activity (MPAct) Laboratory (Supervisor: Dr. Jenna Gibbs), has received a research fellowship from the RSBO Network (R茅seau de recherche en Sant茅 Buccodentaire et Osseuse).

Silar's research aims to understand the role of nutrition and exercise in preventing bone fragility in endurance-trained individuals and athletes.

Dr. Suning Wang Award celebrates academic staff who exemplify the highest standards in teaching, training, and mentoring.

The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) has announced that听Nancy Heath, PhD, Distinguished James 海角社区 Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at 海角社区, has been selected as the winner of the 2023 Dr. Suning Wang Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship.

In October 2023, a team of Indigenous hockey players, advocates, researchers, and change makers gathered here at 海角社区 in Tiohnti脿:ke/Montr茅al for a three-day Summit on Indigenous hockey. The Summit was organized by the Indigenous Hockey Research Network (IHRN) , and hosted by Mike Auksi and Davina McLeod: two Indigenous hockey players and emergent researchers committed to the promotion of a more just game.

On December 7, the Women鈥檚 National Housing & Homelessness Network, the Pan-Canadian Voice on Women鈥檚 Housing, the National Indigenous Housing Network, and an intersectional, nation-wide coalition of feminist advocates joined together to deliver a clear call to action to the Government of Canada.

On December 19, 2023, 海角社区 announced it is launching a $3,000听Canada Award听to offset tuition increases for Canadian undergraduate students from outside Quebec in certain disciplines. Approximately 80% of new Canadian students from outside Quebec coming to 海角社区 will be eligible for the new award.
