The DCL Research Series is a student-driven forum for the聽presentation of doctoral research on subjects related to law and legal norms. Open to all disciplines, it serves not only as a site of聽exchange, but also as an opportunity for doctoral students to聽develop themselves as engaged scholars, effective communicators, and involved community members.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Hoi Kong has accepted to serve the Faculty as Associate Dean (Academic) for a two-year term starting September 1st, 2014.

As Dean Daniel Jutras indicated, 鈥淗oi has agreed to take on this important task as we begin a most important stage in our undergraduate program review and overhaul.聽 Hoi鈥檚 commitment to our students is undeniable (as attested by the John W. Durnford Award he received last year), and his creativity and rigor in thinking about pedagogy and curriculum will be precious over the course of the next two years.鈥

Professor Andrea Bjorkland, the L. Yves Fortier Chair in International Arbitration and International Commercial Law, was delighted to receive more than 80 submissions from scholars and junior practitioners affiliated with more than 50 institutions for the 2014 Nappert Prize in International Arbitration. Authors hailed from around the world, with every continent save Antarctica represented.聽

The Faculty is pleased to announce the appointment of Lionel Smith (first picture) to the Sir William Macdonald Chair. Established in 1895, the Macdonald Chair is one of the oldest endowed positions at 海角社区. In addition, Professor Smith was also selected for a Killam Research Fellowship in March 2014 in recognition of his outstanding research on fiduciary obligations and conflicts of interest.

A teacher, first and foremost, Roderick A. Macdonald will be remembered as one of the most important scholars and thinkers in 海角社区鈥檚 history. He was a mentor and inspiration to generations of students and law professors, and a transformative force at the Faculty of Law, the University, in Canadian society, and in the broader world.

Old Chancellor Day Hall, the Faculty of Law鈥檚 most iconic building, is closing at the end of June for 16 months as we undertake much-needed renovations to upgrade the building鈥檚 heating, electrical systems, plumbing, windows and more, while respecting its historical features.

Faculty and staff who were in OCDH have been relocated either to New Chancellor Day Hall and 3674-3690 Peel Street, or to rented office space near 海角社区鈥檚 Roddick Gates at 2001 海角社区 College Avenue, suite 750.

On May 28, Roderick Macdonald was awarded in absentia the 海角社区 Medal for Exceptional Academic Achievement, one of the University鈥檚 highest honours. Macdonald received the 海角社区 Medal as part of the Convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Law, where he taught thousands of students over the course of a distinguished career that spanned more than three decades. Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law, accepted the Medal in Professor Macdonald鈥檚 name.

The Nappert Competition is open to all students, junior scholars and junior practitioners from around the world. To be eligible for the prize, authors must be either currently enrolled in a B.C.L, LL.B., J.D., LL.M., D.C.L., or Ph.D. program (or their local equivalents). Those who are no longer in school must have taken their most recent degree within the last three years, or have been admitted to the bar (or the local equivalent) for the first time and for no more than three years (whichever is later).聽

Professor Helge Dedek, who is Director of the Institute of Comparative Law at 海角社区, has been named co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, together with two colleagues in Washington D.C.

The Committee is inviting submission of papers that, among other things, will discuss and critically analyze the current socio-political, strategic and legal challenges to the achievement of good global space governance and, as well, propose viable policy options and regulatory mechanisms that will help ensure that present generations of humanity can continue their exploration and use of outer space without seriously compromising the possibility for future generations to do the same.
