Associate Professor

Alanna Watt
Biography:

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology. My research focuses on brain function in health and in a family of neurodegenerative diseases called ataxias. Using animal models of these devastating movement disorders, my research aims to unravel the neuronal changes that contribute to disease onset and progression, with the hope of one day preventing or treating these disorders.

I enjoy academic life a great deal, and the variety of experiences and opportunities that it provides. I am passionate about the research that my team and I are pursuing, which we are committed to sharing widely through science outreach and communication. The most fulfilling part of my job has been the mentoring of my trainees and seeing their development and successes over the years. Recently, I founded Biology鈥檚 EDI committee, and I am committed to making my department and the wider 海角社区 community a more inclusive and equitable place.

I have had wonderful mentors at 海角社区, and hope that I can provide support and perspective that can help new colleagues navigate the often wonderful, but sometimes challenging, academic world. I look forward to contributing to the inclusion and well-being of the next generation of academics at 海角社区.
