Meet 2021 Global Health Scholar Allyson Kis

海角社区 Global Health Scholar Allyson Kis is a Medical student working with Surgery Professor Dr. Evan Wong.

Meet Allyson Kis, a Medical student and 海角社区 Global Health Scholar supported by the Dr. Margaret Siber Global Health Scholar Award. She is currently evaluating trauma and acute care in Northern Quebec with Dr. Evan Wong.

"As a recipient of the Dr. Margaret Siber Global Health Scholar Award, I have the pleasure to take part in the evaluation of trauma and acute care resources as well as telemedicine readiness in Nunavik. The assessment of trauma and acute surgical capacity is being done using the Personnel, Infrastructure, Procedures, Equipment, Supplies (PIPES) Surgical Assessment tool, the International Assessment of Capacity for Trauma (INTACT) index, as well as the Telemedicine Readiness Questionnaire (modified Maryland Health Care Commission tool). These tools are then administered to Kuujjuaq鈥檚 Centre de Sant茅 Tulattavik de l鈥橴ngava (CSTU) and Puvirnituq鈥檚 Inuulitisivik Health Centre (IHC) and its 6 respective catchment areas. Dr. Wong and I hope that by filling this important knowledge gap in care that the results of this study can be used for quality improvement initiatives as well as a base for future funding priorities.

Having grown up in a small northern town in British Columbia, I have been exposed to the challenges that remote communities face as a result of limited resources. The lack of care in rural populations as well as Indigenous underrepresentation is unacceptable in my eyes. As an advocate of Indigenous Health, I am very passionate about this study and hope to make more tangible contributions within our healthcare system throughout my medical career.

It has also been amazing working alongside such an inspiring physician with a unique educational background. Dr. Wong鈥檚 dedication in research as well as his individual practice is very inspiring. I have been continuously learning throughout this project through interactions with diverse health care professionals, literature reviews, and data collection."

海角社区 is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous Peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg Nations. 海角社区 honours, recognizes, and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which peoples of the world now gather. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
