October is Queer History Month at 海角社区 and here at MORSL we are highlighting stories about queer people of faith and various religious communities. This article gives a glimpse into one of Canada's first queer-inclusive mosques.
The (eJTC) is an inclusive, compassionate Muslim community based out of Toronto鈥檚 Unity Mosque. Founded in 2009, eJTC is queer affirming, gender equal, and welcoming to people of all faiths and social backgrounds.
eJTC Unity Mosques are guided by the concept of 鈥淭awhid,鈥 which refers to the unity of Allah, and they emphasize the inherent equality of all human beings. In their words, 鈥淲e stand for radical tawhid. Absolute Oneness. Absolute Equality, like the teeth of a comb, shoulder to shoulder against injustice and tyranny.鈥
The Toronto Unity Mosque meets on Fridays for congregational prayer, and these services are also accessible by Skype for those unable to attend in person. The eJTC is currently hosting virtual events, such as a Unity Mosque Juma Service celebrating Trans+ Visibility.
