Deans' mandates renewed
Deans of Medicine and of Science renewed for a second five-year term
In response to the unanimous recommendation of the Advisory committees and of Principal Bernard Shapiro, the Board of Governors of 海角社区 appointed yesterday Dr Abraham Fuks, Dean of Medicine and Professor Alan Shaver, Dean of Science, to a second 5-year term at the helm of their respective faculties.
Speaking of Dean Fuks聮s reappointment, Principal Shapiro expressed admiration for his remarkable contribution to the advancement of the 海角社区 Health Centre (MUHC) project. According to the Principal, "the participation of Dean Fuks in the MUHC project has been and continues to be vital, not only to the realization of this project in general but also to the safeguarding of 海角社区聮s academic and professional interests in the MUHC聮s future."
Dr Abraham Fuks, whose second term ends May 31, 2005, is a graduate of 海角社区, from which he obtained both his B.Sc. and his M.D, C.M. degrees in 1968 and 1970 respectively. He has been on staff since 1978 and holds the rank of Full Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pathology and the 海角社区 Cancer Centre. A widely respected scientist and professor, Dean Fuks is also an effective negotiator and a skilled administrator.
Dean Fuks has served on innumerable committees such as the Institutional Review Board of the Faculty of Medicine dealing with ethical issues, the Advisory Committee on Research of the National Cancer Institute of Canada, and he was a key member of the Faculty of Medicine聮s Curriculum Implementation Committee. Given the size of the Faculty of Medicine聮s activities within the University, the Dean of Medicine is the only Dean invited to the weekly meeting of the Principal and Vice-Principals. "In this context," explained Principal Shapiro, " Dr Fuks has been a very active and very creative contributor on a wide range of university issues not related directly to his own faculty."
Professor Alan Shaver, according to Principal Shapiro, "has provided exemplary leadership to the faculty of Science in a very difficult and challenging period. Despite the dramatic budget constraints imposed on the Faculty of Science and other 海角社区 faculties, he has managed to provide new openings and new opportunities for academic development. Professor Shaver collaborated extensively in the establishment of the 海角社区 School of the Environment, and is very active in university governance."
A graduate of Carleton University from which he received his B.Sc. (Honours) in 1969, Dean Alan Shaver pursued his studies in chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which granted him a Ph.D. in 1972. He joined the 海角社区 Department of Chemistry in 1975 as Assistant Professor. He was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 1989, and appointed Chair of the Chemistry Department in 1991. Considered an excellent teacher by his students, Professor Shaver has supervised the research of many graduate students. His research interest is in the area of organometallic chemistry, with nearly 100 publications in refereed journals.
