海角社区 student Jonathan Glencross recognized for environmental achievement by Earth Day Canada

Toronto, ON 鈥 June 6, 2011 鈥‥arth Day Canada in partnership with Cascades Inc., RBC Foundation and Mill Street Brewery is pleased to announce Canada鈥檚 2011 Individual Hometown Heroes Award winner, Jonathan Glencross. He will be honoured at Earth Day Canada鈥檚 annual Gala in the evening of June 8 in Toronto at the Drake Hotel in front of 500 business and environmental leaders.鈥ㄢㄢ淛onathan is an environmental leader who has shown commitment and achieved results in his community,鈥 says Jed Goldberg, president of Earth Day Canada. 鈥淗e is an unsung hero of the environmental movement in Canada and works tirelessly for a cause that every household in Canada is concerned about.鈥濃ㄢ↗onathan鈥檚 significant contribution at 海角社区 was the coordination of the Sustainable 海角社区 Project. This project makes university culture, curriculum and operations more sustainable through cyclic assessment, short and long-term goal setting and community engagement. Jonathan is the co-founder of the 海角社区 Food Systems Project which works to create a campus community-wide sustainable food system.鈥ㄢˋnother of Jonathan鈥檚 impressive accomplishments is the creation of the Sustainability Projects Fund (SPF) which, valued at $2.5 million is accessible to the entire campus community and is based on the contributions from 海角社区 students being matched by the university administration.鈥ㄢ═he SPF facilitates the planning, financing and implementation of projects that promote the principles of sustainability. The largest fund of its kinds, the SPF is self-reproducing and has already financed over 45 projects to give back to the campus community in a lasting way.鈥ㄢore鈥‥arth Day Canada has long recognized that the most important environmental work happens at the community level and Jonathan鈥檚 contributions to the 海角社区 community are evidence of that fact. Jonathan will join the ranks of the passionate and hardworking Hometown Hero winners from years past.鈥ㄢ–anada鈥檚 2011 individual environmental hero receives a cash-prize of $10,000 ($5,000 to keep and $5,000 to donate to the environmental cause of their choice). The Hometown Heroes Award program was established in 2004 by Earth Day Canada to recognize and celebrate environmental leaders who have fostered meaningful, long鈥搕erm community awareness and action, recognizes and encourages environmental leadership and achievement in local communities.
