Description

Academic Associate / Senior Academic Associate

Person who has obtained a doctorate or equivalent in a relevant discipline and is appointed in their professional capacity to support the academic unit to which they are appointed and who engages in academic activities within that unit.

As per 4.3.2 of the regulations, teaching is possible;Ìýan MCLIU contract and job posting are required. Please refer to MCLIU collective agreement.

Adjunct Professor

Person employed by or associated with a university other than º£½ÇÉçÇø, a government, industry, or a profession, whose professional qualifications and/or the experience allow them to participate in the teaching*Ìýand/or research activities of the Department or Faculty to which they are appointed.

*with an MCLIU contract - possible that posting is not required. Please refer to MCLIU collective agreement.

Affiliate Member

Person holding an appointment external to the University and who is appointed as an Affiliate Member to participate in the academic activities of a unit of the University. This is a nil-salary position.

Associate Member

Person holding an appointment within the University and who is appointed as an Associate Member to participate in the academic activities of another unit of the University.

Professor of Practice

Professional, business, industry or government leader who has made major contributions to their field or discipline who is engaged primarily in academic activities related to the appointee's practice, methods and values of the appointee's field, discipline or vocation in the Department or Faculty to which they are appointed.

As per 4.3.2 of the regulations, teaching is possible; an MCLIU contract and job posting are required. Please refer to MCLIU collective agreement.

Professor of Practice, Academic Associate or Senior Academic Associate can hold another University appointment allowing them to carry out teaching duties subject to any applicable collective agreement. Adjunct Professors may teach, subject to any applicable collective agreement.

Recruiting and Hiring

Non-unionized CAS are governed by the Regulations Relating to the Employment of Contract Academic Staff.

Course Lecturers, Instructors, Research Assistants and Research Associates are unionized academic staff. For unionized staff, please email the hr.hr [at] mcgill.ca (HR Service Centre) or academicapprovals.hr [at] mcgill.ca (Academic Approvals HR) for assistance with recruitment.

Advertising an Unranked Contract Academic Staff position

Advertising is mandatory only for new Academic Associate positions. Advertising should appear in venues appropriate to the job requirements. If the minimum education requirements for the position differ from the Regulation stipulations (section 6.2), the job description must be approved by the Acting Associate Provost (Academic Policies & Faculty Affairs) prior to advertising (if applicable) and hiring.

Procedure

Once a recruit has been identified, the hiring department must assemble the Recruitment Dossier and submit it to the Dean for approval.Ìý

    If applicable, immigration documentation is required.

    HR will require a valid temporary work permit for non-Canadians and non-Permanent Residents of Canada.

Reappointment

The conditions for reappointment of Unranked CAS shall be determined by the Departmental Chair in accordance with the Regulations Relating to the Employment of Contract Academic Staff.

Unranked CAS members may be reappointed for additional Definite Term Appointments of not more than three years. Recommendations for the reappointment of Unranked CAS shall be submitted, with reasons, by the Department Chair to the Dean. Reappointment decisions are made at the Faculty level.

An Adjunct Professor, a Professor of Practice, an Associate Member, and an Affiliate Member may be reappointed for additional Definite Term Appointments of not more than three years at a time.

An Academic Associates or Senior Academic Associate may be reappointed for an additional Definite Term Appointment of not more than three years. However, an Academic Associate or Senior Academic Associate who is continuously employed for six years shall be recommended for reappointment for an Indefinite Term.

Procedure

  1. The department submits the reappointment dossier in Workday for Adjunct Professors, Professors of Practice, Academic Associates, and Senior Academic Associates.Ìý

Indefinite Appointment

An Academic Associate or Senior Academic Associate continuously employed for 6 years shall be recommended for an Indefinite Term. Indefinite term appointments do not apply to the following CAS unranked positions: Adjunct Professor, Professor of Practice, Associate Member and Affiliate Member.

Promotions

Academic Associate may be promoted to a Senior Academic Associate upon the recommendation of the Department Chair, after a minimum of six continuous years in the same department.

If a CAS member’s performance is outstanding, the Department Chair may, with the consent of the CAS member, recommend a promotion at any point.
