The Canada Council for the Arts has announced six recipients of the prestigious 2020 Killam Research Fellowship, including 海角社区听Professor听Myriam Denov.听听

Professor Myriam Denov, Canada Research Chair in Youth, Gender and Armed Conflict, received a 2020 Killam Research Fellowship to support her work examining the needs of children born of war in northern Uganda.

She is the first social work researcher ever to receive a Killam Research Fellowship in the award鈥檚 50+ year history.

Professor Delphine Collin-Vezina has been Partnership grant over 7 years to support the Canadian Consortium on Child Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care. This Partnership unites 39 co-applicants (including Kate Maurer and Mike MacKenzie from our School), 18 collaborators (including Wanda Gabriel and Ben Geboe from our school), and 43 partner organizations from across Canada.

Tomas Jirousek鈥檚 courageous and respectful leadership to change the Redmen name and efforts to educate and engage students in active reconciliation impressed Indigenous Access 海角社区 (IAM) and by unanimous agreement of their awards committee, Tomas was named the inaugural recipient of the Moral Courage in Reconciliation Award. Future recipients of the Award will be proud to stand in his company and IAM is hoping his example inspires others to take courageous, dignified, and effective action to implement the TRC鈥檚 Calls to Action.

On February 4th, Prof. Boatswain-Kyte presenting with Tiffany Callendar, Executive Director of the C么te des Neiges Black Community Association (CDNBCA) and Tania Callendar, Executive Director of the African Canadian and Development and Prevention Network (ACDPN) reported on the overrepresentation of Black Anglophone children within the child protection system and the need for a co-intervention partnership to ensure cultural adaptation of services and provision of support services within the community.

Lillian was recently recognized for her dedication and exceptional work as the recipient of the Arts Award of Excellence for Administrative and Support Staff.听听Lillian Iannone has been a member of the 海角社区 community and School of Social Work for 45 years. At the age of 17, straight out of high school, Lillian interviewed for a position at the School and has been there听ever since. She is currently the Administrative & Student Affairs Coordinator.听

Darrell Roy Johnson, 59, of Montr茅al died on February 9, 2020 at the Cornwall Hospice in Cornwall, Ontario. He spent his final days surrounded by family members and friends as well as many caring doctors, nurses, and personal support workers. He struggled valiantly following his brain tumour diagnosis in November 2018, always retaining his characteristic sense of humour and hope, but eventually succumbed to complications from the condition.

On December 10th, Professor Trocm茅 presented child protection research and recommendations to the Special Commission on听Children's Rights and Youth Protection. He argued for a more flexible听approach in collaboration with professionals and community agencies with better access to specialized services.

Fleurette Osborne, MSW 海角社区, died in Hamilton, Ontario on November 23, at the age of 92. Her body is currently in the care of Kane Fetterly funeral home. Important documents are missing. Fleurette was a community activist and founding member and President of the Black Women of Canada.
