Learning French at 海角社区

海角社区 is expanding opportunities for students to develop French-language skills while they study. Participation is optional and French proficiency is not a requirement for graduation, but this is a great chance to connect with the community and immerse yourself in the culture of Montreal, North America's largest French-speaking city.

Is French proficiency a requirement for admission?

No, Fall 2025 admission criteria remain unchanged. Proof of French proficiency is not required for admission in the BCom program.

Do I need to achieve a specific level of French to graduate?

No, newly admitted students will not need to demonstrate proficiency in French to graduate.

French proficiency remains an admission requirement for select undergraduate programs and demonstrated proficiency may be required for certain French language based courses and programs of study.


CEGEP Admission Questions

I come from CEGEP. What prerequisite math courses do I need?

If I took Economics or Accounting in High School/CEGEP, will I be exempted from these courses at 海角社区?

Normally, students will not be exempted based on high school or CEGEP level courses. Students who feel they have a strong foundation in a particular subject may write mathematics and science placement tests at the time of their admission.

Is there an advantage to completing the Commerce program at CEGEP before entering the BCom?

Students do not receive credit or exemption from courses completed at CEGEP. Students who follow the Commerce program at CEGEP receive an introduction to many of the topics they will cover in their Bachelor of Commerce degree. Conversely, students who follow one of the other programs at CEGEP receive a more rounded, diverse background.

General Admission Questions

If I am a student from a province outside of Quebec, must I complete CEGEP?

No. CEGEP is intended for students from Quebec. Information on Admissions requirements can be found on the Applying to 海角社区 website.

What G.P.A. is required to transfer to 海角社区?

Information on applying to transfer to 海角社区 from another university, including deadlines, past average cut-offs and course requirements, can be found on the Applying to 海角社区 website.

As a transfer student, what kind of advanced credits and/or standing will I receive?

Wherever possible, if a transfer student completed recognized studies prior to university the advanced standing credits will be granted by the Admissions Office at the time of acceptance. In many instances, however, courses completed at University have to be evaluated for content. This is done using the Course equivalency database and working with an academic advisor as soon as a student is admitted. It is the student's responsibility to ensure they have all appropriate detailed course outlines and reach out to the BCom office for advising as soon as they accept their offer.

Will I know what credits or exemptions I will receive at 海角社区 before I apply?

Please note neither the Admissions Office nor the BCom Student Affairs Office will review transfer credits and course equivalencies before students are accepted and accept their offer.

To see the courses previously evaluated for equivalency from your current institution, search the Course Equivalency Database This database is not exhaustive and prospective students may not request evaluations but it might give some information about which courses have been approved or refused in past years.

Can I obtain my degree from three certificates in Management as is the current policy in some of the francophone universities?

This option is not available at 海角社区. Students in the Certificate of Management at Continuing Education considering a Bachelor's degree should apply into the Bachelor of Commerce program as early as possible

I have already completed 2 years in a Business or Commerce program at another university, can I apply to transfer?

Unfortunately, because of the residency requirement of credits to be completed at 海角社区 during the degree, students with more than one completed year of Business courses would not be permitted to transfer into the program.

Program Structure

What are the differences between the two Options of the BCom?

General Management, as the name indicates, is the most general of the options. Students may combine a Concentration (Management specialization) with a second Concentration, a Minor (from Arts or Science), or an approved set of Structured Electives.

Major or Honours, offers the most focused study in one specific area. Students must complete a minimum of 30 credits (ten courses) within this option.

Do I have to follow the Core courses according to the sequence listed in the calendar?

For the most part yes, especially in the first year. It is important to take the courses indicated in the first year since they are prerequisite to other courses. After the first year, course selection will vary depending on the program selected.

Can I complete my degree in less than the normal allotted time?

It is possible by taking summer courses, or an overload, to accelerate the completion of the degree. Students are not permitted to take an overload (more than 15 credits) in their first year, and may only do so in subsequent years, if their GPA on a full load of courses is 3.0 or better. . It is important to take into consideration that course availability in the summer is limited. Students may not enroll in more than 12 credits in the summer. However, summer courses in the BCom program are most often taught in the May-June session only, so enrolling in 6 credits is the norm for most students.

Can I complete my degree part-time?

No, the BCom program is meant to be a full-time program with students enrolled in 12-15 credits each term. In exceptional cases where health or personal issues require a reduced courseload, students may arrange to study part-time for a term or two but are required to work with an academic advisor to return to full-time status in a timely fashion.

When do I have to declare my Major/Concentration?

You should declare your major/concentration any time up to your second to last year. You will have the opportunity to meet with an advisor to discuss your options. Exceptions: The Major in Economics program must be declared in U1 (sophomore year) as the required Economics courses are different for these students.

What Minors am I allowed to complete?

Students in the Desautels Faculty of Management are permitted to follow any of the .

Am I allowed to combine Majors in the Desautels Faculty of Management with the Faculty of Arts or Science?

No. Management students may only take programs in the Areas of Study offered by the Desautels Faculty of Management. They may not select Majors or Honours programs offered by other Faculties. Management students may however complete a Faculty of Arts or Science Minor.

I am interested in the Honours in Investment Management. Can I start at 海角社区 in this program?

No, all BCom students must complete U1 and apply to the Honours in Investment Management program after completing at least one year in the faculty and apply in January to continue in HIM in their last two years of the degree.

Career Management is here for you from the start of your academic journey to the end and we encourage you to reach out anytime! From your first semester, connect with the Career Management team to explore your student journey and discover how they can support your internship and job preparation (assistance building your resume and cover letter, interview preparation). U0 and U1 students also have access to Peer Advisors, who offer guidance on student clubs and resources. When Should I connect with the Career Management team?

Students are given the opportunity to connect with the career management team or a peer advisor right from the start of the program, ensuring they receive guidance and support throughout their journey.

When should I prepare to apply for internships?

You can book an appointment with a Career Coach at any point during your academic journey, starting from your first semester. This is a great opportunity to understand and prepare for the internship application process. To connect with a BCom Career Coach, click here.

What resources are available for BCom students in the job search process?

BCom students have access to a wide range of services. They can meet with a Career Coach to prepare for job interviews, receive updates on on-campus recruitment activities, evaluate internships and job offers, learn about partnerships, and refine their resumes. First-year students can connect with Peer Advisors, who serve as an initial point of contact, helping them navigate Career Management and coaching services. Additionally, students gain access to exclusive job and internship opportunities in Quebec, Ontario, across Canada and internationally through , the Career Management platform.
