鈥淛oyce鈥檚 Principle aims to guarantee to all Indigenous people the right of equitable access, without any discrimination, to all social and health services, as well as the right to enjoy the best possible physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.鈥

Joyce's Principle is a document created by the Atikamekw Nation and Manawan First Nation following the death of Mrs. Joyce Echaquan on Sept. 28, 2020, at the Joliette Hospital Center in Lanaudi猫re, Qu茅bec, during which she was subjected to verbally violent and racist statements by health workers.

Jennifer Petiquay-Defresne, Atikamekw from Manawan, is Director of the Office of Joyce鈥檚 Principle. She will present Joyce鈥檚 Principle to the audience, emphasizing the recommendations directed to the academy, health professionals and other key stakeholders responsible for health. This will be followed by an interactive discussion to explore ways of operationalizing Joyce鈥檚 Principle at faculty and university levels.
