How are supervisors assigned? When does this happen?
Doctoral candidates
Doctoral applicants are not required to contact a potential supervisor during the application process. Applicants who receive an offer of admission to the Faculty of Law are provided with the name of a professor who has agreed to supervise their work.
While applicants to the DCL program are invited to suggest potential supervisors based on their proposed research topic, the choice of supervisor is finalized by the Associate Dean, Graduate Programs in Law, in consultation with the Graduate Programs Admissions Committee. Factors taken into account include potential funding, mentoring capacity, and potential for high quality attention and support.
LLM candidates
LLM applicants are not required to contact a potential supervisor during the application process. LLM candidates are assigned a supervisor during their first semester at the Faculty of Law by the Associate Dean, Graduate Programs in Law.
Supervisors are chosen based on the student鈥檚 background and interests and on the professor鈥檚 mentoring and guidance capacities with respect to the particular student.
