Conducting M.Mus.

Program overview

Students specialize in orchestral, wind, or choral conducting. Enrolment is limited to outstanding candidates with highly developed musical skills in voice, instrumental, or piano performance.聽 The program provides for concentrated podium time, interactions with world-class conductors, score study, and the development of rehearsal technique. A range of seminars provides for the in-depth study of performance practice and the development of analytical skills.

Faculty

Renowned faculty has experience on international stages in a wide range of orchestral, wind, contemporary, early music and choral repertoires.

Resources and Opportunities

Students benefit from:

  • Concentrated podium time and opportunity to rehearse with varied ensembles;
  • The Marvin Duchow Performance Library resources;
  • Opportunities to observe rehearsal techniques of major Montreal ensembles, including guest conductors with the MSO, among others.

Awards

Conductors have received Schulich scholarships and graduate excellence awards, among others.聽 They have also won Canada Council Grants, as well as national and international competitions leading to internships with the Canadian Opera Company, major Canadian Orchestras and choral ensembles, recording contracts, and chamber ensembles.

Careers

Some graduates continue on to doctoral studies; others pursue conducting and teaching positions in schools, orchestras, and as opera assistants.
