Jean-Pierre Farmer Foundational Chair Lectureship

Dr. Jean-Pierre FarmerDr. Jean-Pierre Farmer, Professor in the Departments of Pediatric Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Surgery and Oncology at 海角社区, is recognized as a leader in the field of pediatric neurosurgery. He is also a visionary leader who created the Department of Pediatric Surgery for which he served as inaugural Chief (2007) and foundational Chair (2011).In over 16 years of leadership, Dr. Farmer was a staunch advocate for children. He recruited 32 new professors and has seen to the promotion of 17 individuals into higher academic ranks in his recruitment and retention efforts all to the benefit of children鈥檚 surgical care. He has nurtured and supported innovation and interdisciplinary care, and he has been a strong advocate for cutting-edge therapies and approaches, playing a key role in bringing intraoperative MRI and the ROSA robot to the MCH and also promoting 鈥榩arental presence at induction鈥, a family-centered practice unique in Quebec.Dr. Farmer, recruited in July 1990, continues to provide clinical care to children with neurosurgical ailments today. He has worked with the Montreal Children鈥檚 Hospital Foundation to raise funds for state-ofthe-art equipment and to establish 6 endowed chairs at the hospital. He has supported his surgical colleagues in their personal growth and professional development. In addition to his work at the MCH, he served as the 海角社区 Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) Associate Dean for Post-Graduate Medical Education and Director of the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. He received numerous awards including the Penfield McNaughton Award (1989), the Pfizer leadership prize in 2010, the Dorothy Williams Endowed Chair in Pediatric Surgery (2007-2023), the Grand Prix d鈥橢xcellence from the Coll猫ge des m茅decins du Qu茅bec (2016), two prizes of excellence in Continued Professional Development (2013) and in Interdisciplinarity (2022) from the Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec and the 鈥淢anuscript of the Year鈥 award from 鈥淣eurosurgery鈥 in 2020.He has published more than 180 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and has been an invited professor on 85 occasions. While many in his position would be considering a well-deserved rest, JeanPierre continues to serve our community, as Associate Vice-Principal Health Affairs and Executive Vice-Dean at 海角社区鈥檚 FMHS.
