Molecules to Integrated Systems

Physiology is the study of how body systems work. Physiologists investigate everything from the interaction of individual molecules to how intact organisms function. Understanding cell and system physiology holds the key to discovering new ways of preventing and curing disease. 听Research in the department focuses on: 听ion channels and transporters, gene transcription, signal transduction, nuclear transport, synapse formation, nerve regeneration, neuroscience, immunology, and biomathematics of physiological systems. Come and discover research in our Department.

Three programs, Liberal, Major, and Honours are offered by the Department of Physiology. All students entering the Department register in either the Liberal or Major program. The first year of a degree program in physiology is generally like that of other sciences, with the student studying common core courses in biology, chemistry, biochemistry and physiology.

Specialized interdisciplinary programs in physiology and math and physiology and physics lets students explore more than one discipline in some depth, bringing different perspectives to the study of Physiology.听 In addition the Department of Physiology participates in the Interdepartmental Joint Honors Program offered together with the Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology and Immunology.听 Our Research Project course gives final-year undergraduate students an opportunity to explore potential career choices through a supervised experience in the laboratory.
