M.A. Second Language Education Prospective Students

NEW APPLICATION POLICY:

Please note the following requirements for all MA Thesis students' Personal Statements:

  1. Applicants must identify two faculty members who might potentially act as their research SUPERVISOR. This information should be clearly indicated at the very top of their statement. It is not necessary to contact these POTENTIAL supervisors but to IDENTIFY two professors whose research area is of interest to you
  2. The Personal Statement should also include a clearly articulated mention of the student’s research topic as well as the research trends and professional experiences that have led to the topic (3-4 paragraphs).

This program provides a multidisciplinary perspective on the teaching and learning of any second or foreign languages, with a primary focus on English and French. Topics in the program include measurement and evaluation, research methods, curriculum development, second language learning and teaching, classroom discourse, sociolinguistics, immersion and language-minority education, early bilingualism and biliteracy.

Program Overview

There are several options for completing the Master of Arts: Second Language Education.

The thesis option is a research-oriented degree, approximately half of which consists of thesis research. The non-thesis option, consisting entirely of course work, is less research-oriented than the thesis option and is suitable for practitioners interested in professional development with a theoretical orientation.

NB: Please note that applications are accepted for the fall semester ONLY. There is no intake for the winter and summer semesters.

The thesis option is recommended for students interested in undertaking a more in-depth independent study or in moving on to a PhD upon completion of their Master's degree. The non-thesis option may be more appropriate if you are wishing to pursue the MA alongside full-time work or are primarily pursuing the degree for career advancement.

Eligibility

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  1. A Completed an undergraduate degree.
  2. The minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is 3.0 out of a possible 4.0, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.2 out of 4.0 in the last two years of full-time studies.
  3. Demonstrate a clear motivation for pursuing a graduate degree in education and an interest in educational issues manifested in cultural, historical, philosophical, economic, and/or political contexts.
  4. For Thesis Only: Demonstrate an interest in learning about and conducting research.
  5. Normally, have a minimum of 36 credits including a combination of relevant courses in education and language studies.
  6. Normally have at least two years of relevant professional experience in education.

Admissions

Admissions for all graduate level programs are done online, via uApply.Ìý Click on the red "Apply Now" icon to begin the process.

Next application deadline: 1st JanÌýfor FallÌýadmission. Applications submitted after this date will not be considered. The uApply system opens mid-September for the following school year.

Required Documents

  • A current working CV
  • A 1-2 page Personal Statement (Letter of Intent), specifying relevant academic and professional experience, particularly experience related to education or other work in a language / teaching context.Ìý(max 2Ìýpages - Double Spaced, Times New Roman 12 font, 1 inch margins)
  • A copy of your unofficial transcripts from ALL previous university level studies (undergraduate and graduate).Ìý Official transcripts are required after the students is officially admitted to the program.
  • Two letters of recommendation, Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a university-level instructor; the other may be from an administrator in an educationally relevant context.
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores Graduate eCalendarÌý (if applicable)
    • IELTS with a minimum overall band of 7.0; (with a minimum writing score of 7.0); or
    • TOEFL:iBT (Internet-based test) – total score of 92 with a minimum score of 22 each for the Writing and Speaking sections and a minimum of 20 each for the Reading and Listening sections and PBT (paper-based test) – 580
    • The Department reserves the right to evaluate the applicant's language proficiency before initial registration and at the time of application.

N.B. Applicants are required to submit their scores electronically. Paper reports are not accepted.
