海角社区 Law research team to receive large award for research in arbitration and transnational law

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that its Private Justice and the Rule of Law Research Team was awarded funding for an ambitious program of research entitled 鈥淧rivate Justice and its Laws: Harmonization, Conciliation and Legitimacy鈥. At $450,000, this is one of the largest peer-reviewed awards ever to have come to the Faculty.

Daniel Clarry wins APDQ 2013 prize for best master鈥檚 thesis in Quebec

At its annual banquet held April 20, 2013, the Association des professeures et professeurs de droit du Qu茅bec (APDQ) awarded Mr. Daniel Clarry its Excellence Prize for best master's theses in 2013 for his work entitled "The irreducible core of the trust" (see on eScholarship@海角社区), prepared under the direction of Professor Lionel Smith, 海角社区.

Diamond Jubilee Medals for 海角社区 Law Community

More than a dozen members of the 海角社区 Faculty of Law community have received Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals this year.

The award, which was created in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty鈥檚 accession to the Throne, recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to Canadian society. In total, 60,000 Canadian medals were awarded in ceremonies occurring throughout the year.

New books and online database launched by the Cr茅peau Centre

On April 3, 2013, the Paul-Andr茅 Cr茅peau Centre for Private and Comparative Law launched three 聽new books and 聽a new resource website.

During a well-attended reception held in the Common Room, Professor Ya毛ll Emerich, interim director of the Centre, presented the books and a new database, and took the opportunity to warmly thank the many writers, editors, supporters and colleagues who participated in their preparation.

Law student Marvin Coleby elected president of the Black Law Students Association of Canada

The Faculty was happy to learn that Marvin H. Coleby, VP external of the Black Law Students Association of 海角社区 (BLSAM), has been elected President of the Black Law Students Association of Canada (BLSAC) for the 2013-2014 Term.

Marvin Coleby campaigned on a platform of youth empowerment, the refocusing of cultural and racial rights, closer Canada-US ties, and the implications of common and civil jurisdiction mixing for Black jurists.

Fabien G茅linas and Fr茅d茅ric Bachand named first Norton Rose Faculty Scholars in Arbitration & Commercial Law

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professors Fr茅d茅ric Bachand and Fabien G茅linas have been appointed Norton Rose Faculty Scholars in Arbitration and Commercial Law, for a two year term.

As holders of these Faculty Scholarships, G茅linas and Bachand, who are both active members of 海角社区's Private Justice and the Rule of Law research team, will be able to support a rich program of activities in international arbitration and commercial law.聽

Six students of聽海角社区's Faculty of Law will聽serve as law clerks to justices of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2014. Daniel Jutras appointed amicus curi忙 by the Supreme Court of Canada

Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Wainwright Chair in Civil Law, has been appointed by the Supreme Court of Canada to serve as amicus curi忙 in the Reference on the Reform of the Senate of Canada that was brought to the Court by the Governor in Council.

Ronald B. Sklar (1935-2013)

It is with great sadness that we must announce the death of Professor Ronald B. Sklar (1935-2013), who passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on March 29, 2013 after a short illness.

Associate Professor Ron Sklar taught and researched in the fields of criminal law, evidence, law and psychiatry and ethical issues in psychiatry at the Faculty of Law of 海角社区 for over 35 years.

Two 海角社区 Law students receive Scarlet Key Award

The Faculty of Law was delighted to hear that two of its students were awarded Scarlet Key Awards during a pining ceremony held at 海角社区鈥檚 Faculty Club on March 22, 2013.

Graham Splawski and Sandra Aigbinode both received their Scarlet Key pins from Principal Heather Munroe-Blum, in recognition of their efforts to help support 海角社区 and the broader community.

Ya毛ll Emerich named acting director of the Cr茅peau Centre

Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law, has announced that Professor Ya毛ll Emerich has been named by the Provost of 海角社区 as Acting Director of the Paul-Andr茅 Cr茅peau Centre for Private and Comparative Law, from 1 January 2013 to 30 June 2013.

Roderick Alexander Macdonald, O.C.

海角社区 Law Professor Roderick A. Macdonald has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of Canada鈥檚 highest civilian honours.

On December 30, Professor Macdonald, the F.R. Scott Professor of Constitutional and Public Law and former Dean of the Faculty of Law, was one of 33 Officers, two Companions and 56 new Members welcomed to the Order of Canada.
