Types of Open Access

Green access

Hybrid access

Gold access

Unlike preprints, which are uploaded before an article is actually published in a journal, there are various ways of making sure the final version published in the journal itself (the published version) is Open Access.

Green Open Access

Green Open Access [12] refers to making a relatively final version of the publication Open Access either at the time it is published in a journal or sometime after. The best way to practice Green Open Access is by uploading your accepted manuscript to an openly accessible repository. The version you upload to such a repository is the one with final content, but not all of the final journal formatting (also known as the 鈥渁ccepted version鈥 or 鈥渁ccepted manuscript鈥). Depending on the journal where the article was published, you may only be allowed to share in this way after a delay (known as an 鈥渆mbargo period鈥). 海角社区 offers such an institutional digital repository at [13]. Submit your work to eScholarship using this online form.

Bronze/Hybrid Open Access

Bronze/Hybrid Open Access [14][15] means publishing an Open Access manuscript in a journal where articles are not openly accessible by default, usually requiring an Article Processing Charge (APC). Journals providing Bronze/Hybrid Open Access publishing have a mix of Closed and Open Access articles.

A key difference between Bronze and Hybrid models is that while Hybrid journals apply an open license to articles, allowing for reuse, Bronze journals do not have a clear open license and are therefore not openly reusable; they can only be read on the journal鈥檚 website. This is considered a less open approach because it prevents reuse and takes away rights from authors.

Gold Open Access

Gold Open Access [16] means publishing in a journal where all articles are Open Access. For journals that publish neuroscience findings, these journals often charge an APC, which generally ranges from around $500 to $10,000 USD. Visiting the and the websites [17][18] will help you identify the quality/cost ratio best for you. 海角社区 also offers some APC discounts, check the [information](LINK) for a few of the top Used Neuro Journals.

Other Open Access journals, however, use alternative business models that allow them to provide 鈥渇ree to read, free to publish鈥 Open Access (sometimes known as Diamond or Platinum Open Access) [5].
